Honestly, Xi doesn’t seem like a funny guy. I’m super curious how he is in his private life though. I had read somewhere (don’t remember where) that he’s a big of Jia Zhangke’s films and that took me by surprise. Who knows, maybe he’s hilarious in private and just great at hiding it.
You are allowed to mock Mao by comparing him to Stalin, but satire is still unfairly restricted in China. The police will not beat you up or throw you in prison, but you will get a 10,000 dollar fine, will lose your house and job, and have to live off welfare.
Trump only won because of Stupublican gerrymandering since 1970.
Communist China was never free, and Xi Jinping is a princeling who fears a return of the Maoists: Xi Jingping's actions are designed to appease the Maoists, and he should have completed his work in December 2026, since that would be when his anti-princeling policy has consolidated itself. We can then assume he would restore state socialism to avoid calls for his resignation, but in December 2028 there would be no reason for Maoists to tolerate him, and thus he will launch a Kim Jong-Un style purge of the Maoists: the regime will be stable by December 2029.
It is inherently funny when someone speaks about funny matters with such seriousness and gravity—this, in itself, is a kind of solemn comedy worthy of respect. Indeed, being funny has its own levels (it can be rated), and it has its own authenticity (you simply cannot force people to laugh). This article is a concise, vivid, and lively demonstration of that.
At the same time, to be fair, Xi Jinping being funny—genuinely or not—can become an official topic on the Chinese Communist Party’s official website should be seen as a rare sign of progress (keeping up with the times), something previously unseen.
My…trying to bolster your social credit score a little bit there, champ? No doubt your totally honest and admiring comment about Dear Leader Xi will pass the censors.
Dear, me trying to bolster my social credit score in the Middle Kingdom by my admiring comment about Dear Leader Xi?Apparently your reading comprehension has a lot of room for improvement.
Nothing you’ve posted contradicts that assessment.
My reading comprehension is rather good: Along with my unfettered free speech, absence of travel restrictions, completely open use of all forms of communication, and constitutionally guaranteed firearm ownership. Our revolution saw to that.
stop mocking people who you’ve misunderstood in my comment section. If you could read Chinese, you’d see how ridiculous you sound. If you continue I will ban you.
Now translating extraneous spoken humor into written humor is an art, but adding in translating into a different language and different idioms? There's no way to accurately judge how humorous Xi actually is from these...just that he's attempting to use humor to defuse awkward situations (a carefully choreographed display of technology getting disrupted by an example of the most primitive version being accidentally turned on, a tap) or make light of being a celebrity (the museum) and even breaking a stereotype (engaging in word play with 'a peasant' to show he doesn't consider such 'beyond his comprehension')
Your ratings and translations reflect YOUR opinion and as someone who has trolled both Hillary supporters and Trump supporters for refusing to accept that their candidate ACTUALLY LOST because of what they said and did, that can be wildly skewed by politics and prejudices.
I'd bump the Cao Kefan joke up to a 4 personally--a hint of menace, maybe, but it's the only one where he displays some self-awareness and ironizes Chinese state policy. (Also, is "hip culture kid" translating 文青 or something else?)
Vibes-wise at least, I like to think of Xi as a Chinese version of Stephen Harper, who was infamous for telling Canadians that he "love(s) television and movies". Now I'm worried whar the Chinese Justin Trudeau will be like...
It was ”很潮的文化人” — lotta creative liberty with that but 文青 was where I was gong with it. Wanted it to be silly and self-abasing as they’re all old… and not “hip” (hence the outdated language)
Is tRump funny? Any examples of him attempting to crack a joke? I get the idea any attempts at humor from him is at the expense of the person targeted …
is this going to be a Xinhua joke? (Or is there really such an account, in which case I'd love to know about it, this list of jokes very outdated, over a decade old.
None of these are even worth mentioning in the context of humour as understood by Westerners. But then neither would be the feeble attempts at public ingratiation by the likes ofTony Blair (and obviously not poor old dumkofp Starmer). Quite a fun idea for an article but unfortunately the author seemms to be as lacking in sense of humour and writing ability as his subject. Extremely dull.
I love Substack as people would seriously rate xi jinping’s jokes
Numbers 9 and 10 are underrated, you could have given them a slightly higher score.
No 2: I'm an Aussie. We make jokes about Tasmania all the time here. Raise rating level.
Messi joke wins the prize on all accounts.
Thanks for this official investigation.
thanks for reading! I've yet to visit Australia... do I get a demerit?
You get an Official Xi Jinping Stamp of Appoval as long as you increase the ratings on the Tassie joke. :)
Fellow Aussie reporting in to concur with everything you're saying here Debbie.
haha - the media obs underestimated the tassie joke. yeah nah. 😂
Hahaha expertly placed YEAH NAH. Thanks for the laugh today :)
i did wonder afterwards should it be Nah Yeah, but there ya go. they’re interchangeable . :)
I mock AI blogging. Nothing I publish here is touched by AI.
The Messi joke is the clear winner, right?
Xi is always at his funniest with soccer, he's truly a pained fan. This with Thailand's prime minister was great: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExSk3shaHOE
I guess I could've given him a 9 there.

that's from Wikileaks, I believe. he tempered that comment with an expression of admiration for the moral clarity of hollywood's WWII films...
Or, maybe he’s just a monomaniacal despot, who set Chinese freedoms back 50 years.
You've described Trump, not Xi
Go shout “Trump is a dictator “ in your downtown; then, shout “Xi is a dictator!” In Beijing.
Get back to us if, and when Chinese authorities release you .
We had an election. Your guy lost. Democracy is like that.

They’re both pretty awful. One is just much more strategic than the other.

I forgot who Jia Zhangke is.

Sorry yours didn’t work out nearly as well.

I think Xi is hilarious. Really, that he will make jokes is progress.

The Chinese Justin Trudeau will be the Maoist leader who will be purged by Xi Jinping December 2028-December 2029.

Get your news from something other than the NYT and CNN. You might find yourself with a better information base.
What’s a cnn & nyt?
Reading this made me imagine a bunch of CCP officials saying, "HAHAHAHAHA! THAT WAS A VERY VERY GOOD ONE, SUPREME LEADER!"
Just curious… What is number 1 in the original Chinese?
Xi delights in publicly embarrassing Putin in public. I have two pictures of him in action and the usually formal Putin surrendering and cracks up.
Virtually all images of Xi, from his earliest days, shows him to have a natural, broad smile.
He is so funny that he jails and kills his political enemies. Things like this are why the internet often sucks
I know a Thread account that shares nothing but Xi’s jokes everyday
is this going to be a Xinhua joke? (Or is there really such an account, in which case I'd love to know about it, this list of jokes very outdated, over a decade old.
Yes, this guy: https://www.threads.com/@winnieemperoriv
This account t rocks lol

I’m not entirely without humor, thanks for reading
There is nothing funny about Communism.
